CERT ACTION & SERVICE - SUPER STORM SANDY
In October and November of 2012, WSC members worked a total of 536 volunteer hours during and
in the week following Hurricane Sandy.
•
Overnight, as the storm came through on October 29-30, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00a.m., for a total
of 161.75 volunteer hours, 26 members assisted the Lakewood Fire Department in observing
downed electrical wires and securing the restricted area around the damage.
•
On Tuesday, October 30, four members observed and secured an exceptionally active downed
wire in a residential area for a total of 13 volunteer hours, from 5:30 p.m. to midnight, in order
to relieve City of Fairview Park responders.

The evenings of October 31 and November 1, six members worked a total of 18.75 volunteer
hours serving as security for a hospitality center at the Rocky River Don Umerley Civic Center
allowing the city’s police auxiliaries to attend to more urgent needs.

From 4:00 p.m. Wednesday October 31 through 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 91 members
served a total of 342.50 volunteer hours co-operating a regional shelter with the Red Cross at
Garfield School in Lakewood.

In addition to the 536 recorded hours, many team members assisted neighbors and family by
clearing debris from their neighborhood streets, making welfare checks on other families,
assisting with chainsaws to remove trees and limbs from across driveways, opening their
homes to those who needed shelter, and delivering food to senior high rises in Lakewood.
